Review: ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’

Fourteen years ago, Greek Canadian actress Nia Vardalos (Toula) had a surprise hit with a sweet and harmless comedy. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” practically capitalized Vardolos’ Greek ethnic heritage with broad and affectionate stereotypes, and co-starred John Corbett (Ian) as her love interest who gets a nasty shock when he meets his fiancee’s big and loud family.

However, in the sequel “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” the storyline has lost the Midas touch, delivering nothing fresh or funny in revisiting the loud yet loving Portokalos clan. All these years later, three generations of the family live on the same working-class Chicago street. When we catch up with Toula and Ian, they’ve lost their marital mojo. Adding to their woes, their only daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), is about to leave for college.

As in the first installment, Andrea Martin’s spunky Aunt Voula steals every scene she’s in with sass and lots of unwanted relationship advice. And then there was John Stamos. I’m still not entirely sure why he was even in the movie in the first place. He served no purpose whatsoever.

The entire movie lacked charm, sparkle and a solid, relatable story to build on. All we get is recycled jokes about finding Greek husbands, that the root of any word is Greek and a contrived walk to the aisle. It’s as though everything lovable from the first movie was wiped clean with Papou’s Windex. Overall, I would give this unnecessary sequel a C-.
