Speaker Trevor Bergman speaks to IB Psychology classes about the Love for Limbs fundraiser.

Allen High School International Baccalaureate (IB) students were visited by LIMBS International company spokesperson Trevor Bergman to help raise awareness for prosthetic solutions for amputees in need of one in third world countries.

LIMBS International provides low-cost prosthetic legs for amputees who live in third world countries around the world. Their mission is to partner with teachers and students at all levels to educate the importance of developing high-quality prosthetic solutions for the millions of amputees who would normally never have the access to to prosthetic technology.

“The cheapest prosthetic leg there is right now is about $2500, the most expensive one being $80,000,” said Bergman. “We are able to provide a prosthetic leg for only $300 which could be life changing for an amputee who otherwise couldn’t afford one.”

LIMBS is teaming up with Allen High School and several other Texas IB schools for a new campaign called LIMBS non-walk. For $20 students and teachers can buy a t-shirt to help support LIMBS in their goal to help provide prosthetic solutions for those in need of one. For every 50 shirts sold one prosthetic leg is provided for an amputee who lives in a third world country.

For the past 36 years, Allen High School has come together to show support and raise money for a fellow citizen that has been impacted by either a disease or disability through the school’s fundraiser Love Week. Now the time has come to not only extend upon that but to also start a new tradition that could continue in future years.

“This is gonna kick us off,” IB Psychology teacher Karen Hunnicutt said. “Instead of just helping one recipient we’re gonna be helping hopefully hundreds.”

The first annual Love For Limbs will be this year and the goal is to help LIMBS International provide over 600 prosthetic legs for amputees. T-shirts to help contribute to this goal can be ordered off of the Allen High School website.
