Eagles Move to 2-0 with Win Over Viera Hawks

The Allen Eagles once again proved that even without Kyler Murray they still have a high powered offense, defeating the Viera (Fla.) Hawks 56-20.

Allen struck early with a 1-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Mitchell Jonke in the first five minutes of the game.

Viera went three-and-out on their first drive, but caught a break with two minutes left in the first half when Jonke threw his first interception of the season.

The Hawks threatened to score but thanks in part to a sack by defensive back Levi Onwuzurike they were forced to punt from their own end zone.

The Eagles were led by Seth Green at QB had a long drive toward the end of the half, but were forced to take the field goal after coming up short in red zone territory.

The half ended with Allen in a decisive lead, 29-6 and with the Hawks having three, three-and-outs.

Green started the second half and rushed for a 5-yard touchdown, after Lionell McConnell took the kick-off return to the Hawks’ 5-yard line.

Shortly after Green threw his third touchdown pass of the night to increase the lead to 43-6.

Green would remain in the second half for almost the rest of the game until wide receiver Jared Tallaje took over towards the end of the game, finishing the night out at the Quarterback position.

Offensive Coordinator Kyle Westerberg said Green “just had the hot hand” so he remained in the game instead of starter Jonke.

“We just wanted to get him rolling a little bit,” Westerberg said. “We gave him the ball and let him go play a little bit.”

Lionell McConnell, who had no touches last game tonight caught a 72-yard pass, a 36-yard pass and returned a kickoff for 86 yards.

Westerberg said of McConnell’s big night, “They were doing some things in the secondary, singling him up, just allowing him to get open and he was just able to make some big plays.”

Allen will play its third consecutive and first district game next Friday against McKinney Boyd at Eagle Stadium.
