Swim team improvements

When the swim team began their 2014-2015 season on Sept. 25 in a spring meet against McKinney Boyd, the girls’ team had high expectations because they were the 2014 District 9-5A and Region 3 swim/dive champions. For the girls swim team captain, junior Sofia Underdahl, she says this is because of their commitment and determination. The swim team meets five days during the school week for an early 6:30 practice.

“Over this past year I’ve worked extra hard to become a better swimmer that I was last year,” Underdahl said. “Constant improvement is necessary to take my swimming to the next level. I’ve worked on my underwater dolphin kick, and I’ve done physical therapy to help my shoulders.”

Although the boys’ team did not make it as far as the girls’ team did in the playoffs last year, senior and captain Gerardo Goana said they’re working out the kinks in this year’s team in order to succeed in the playoffs.

“We have a big problem with people getting out of the water in out practices, because they get tired or they get crampsSo I guess just work on that,” Goana said. “We will have the most success if we keep working hard in practice to get the best results.”

Goana said that there are many ways the team can continue to improve throughout the season, and that they will continue to improve in future years due to their young team.

“Our team is very young, about two thirds of the team members are either freshmen or sophomores,” Goana said. “So they’re still getting used to high school practices, and continuing to improve.”
