An earthquake measuring at a magnitude of 5.1 hit the small village of Khonj, Iran, in the early hours of Jan. 6. The earthquake killed four Afghan laborers working on nearby farms.

Turkish authorities have identified the gunman who attacked a nightclub in Istanbul the morning of Jan. 1. The attack has been claimed by ISIS but the suspect has not yet been captured.

National

A lone suspect, identified as Esteban Santiago, opened fire on Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Jan. 6, killing five people and leaving eight injured. The shooting took place in the Terminal 2 baggage claim area and the shooter is now in custody.

Paul Ryan announced Thursday during a press conference that the bill proposed to repeal Obamacare would also defund Planned Parenthood if passed. Planned Parenthood provides women’s health care including abortions, sexually transmitted disease screening and access to birth control.

Local

A shooting took place in an Allen residential neighborhood the night of Jan. 3 over an argument that began on Facebook. Four people were injured in the shooting, which moved into the street around midnight and ended with nine of the 16 involved in custody.

A contest is being held to give lyrics to the Allen Eagle Fight Song. The winner will have their name printed on the fight song banner and be recognized at a football game in the 2017-2018 season. Entries to the contest are due Jan. 31, and can be submitted here.
