Cameron Canty Line Q&A

Leaving students in awe by the first piece released from his “Eccentric” collection, Junior Cameron Canty utilizes his artistic mind and passion for style to create a fashion line. The jacket is a representation of the past year he’s put into this idea and also his vision for the future of his clothing pieces.

What inspired you or caused you to want to design this jacket?

I’ve always liked clothes since I was in like fifth or sixth grade but I came up with the idea last year, my sophomore year, second semester it just hit me that I wanted to start making clothes.”

I just started trying to sketch up some ideas but I wasn’t very good at drawing so I had one of my other friends try to do something and then I realized I can’t really work well with people so I just did it on my own and it took me a year to come up with the idea that I have now.

What is this line about/ what’s your vision?

I’m all about kids using creativity, I’m totally against drinking and smoking, so I feel like if people like put that stuff to the side and actually use their creativity then they can do cool stuff whatever it is—fashion music painting or art whatever it is.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully working and being a merchandising marketer for like Adidas or some cool like fashion brand or hopefully a creative director or something too.

What is a creative director?

Kind of the same thing as a designer they just don’t do the actual drawings.

Who/what inspired you?

My biggest inspiration would probably be my favorite designer Virgil Abloh or Raf Simons, their pieces are just timeless and their just like—they’re cool you know.

Why did you decide to go with this idea, “Eccentric”?

I wanted something that was gonna represent me best as possible, I wanted to show people that I could do more than just a t-shirt.

What exactly does eccentric mean?

The definition of eccentric means like weird, cool—because my designs they’re all different types of stuff.

So did you actually make the patches yourself?

I didn’t make the patch for the jacket I ordered it through a family owned business and the jacket was from amazon—I just put it together.

What made you choose “Eccentric”?

I was inspired by the patch from one of Virgil’s past collections—it was a military jacket full of patches and I just thought that was so cool—I knew I wanted to do something with a patch.

So I started looking online and I was listening to Kid Cudi’s new album—the latest album he dropped called satellite flight—and it’s like space and that made me Google space patches and that’s where I came up with it.

What does this jacket mean to you?

It goes along with the quote on the back of the jacket that says ‘one small step for man one giant step for mankind.’

Basically for me that’s showing that it’s a small step for me because it’s the first thing I’m doing but it’s a big step to show kids that you can do anything you put your mind to.

Did you know before you released the preview of the jacket that people would be so hype about it?

I felt like it was a good idea but at the same time I knew a lot of people wouldn’t jump on board with it because a lot of people have their own style you know.

What were your biggest challenges with this design?

The biggest challenges I’ve faced is money—being able to get things out on time.

So what is your overall intention with this line?

Just to make clothes that I will wear and my friends will wear.
