Nini’s Top 10: 3/17/15

  1. I know I’m supposed to remain calm, cool and collected as your “pop culture expert,” but oh my God, Pokémon. I may one of the few eighteen-year-olds left in this world who still revolve my entire life around these pocket monsters, but starting March 16, players with “Pokémon Shuffle” can partake in a Mega Lucario event, allowing them to defeat Mega Lucario and gain high scores. The top 20,000 players will receive a Lucarionite to Mega Evolve their Lucario. We can go back to other pop culture now.

  1. Sleater-Kinney vocalist Carrie Brownstein’s long-awaited memoir “Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl” will be released on Oct. 27. I’m incredibly excited to get into my hero’s psyche and learned more about what goes on behind her music and “Portlandia.”

  1. At one point in my career as “Nini’s Top 10,” I announced that Death Grips were broken up. I am happy to say that they are back and have released “On GP,” a new track on their upcoming album, “Jenny Death,” the second half of “the powers that b.” “On GP” and the ten-second snippets that the band themselves leaked will satisfy me as I wait for “Jenny Death,” out March 17.

  1. We’ve all probably seen the video at least eight times by now and retweeted at least 24 memes relating to it but pop artist Natalia Kills and her musician husband Willy Moon were kicked off New Zealand’s version of “The X-Factor” for bullying and harassing contestant Joe Irvine. Kills claimed that Irvine lacked artistic integrity for wearing an outfit similar to her husband’s ensemble – a black-and-white suit and tie. I guess she can’t come to Prom because all the guys will lack artistic integrity.

  1. In 2012 metal band consisting of then-sixth graders Unlocking the Truth captured my heart with their Times Square performances. Since then they have performed with Marilyn Manson and took to Warped tour and Coachella with their young talent. They also signed a $1.8 million deal with Sony but have announced that they are currently working with lawyers to see if they can back out. Wherever they sign, Unlocking the Truth will certainly rock.

  1. I still can’t exactly pinpoint what genre of music they are but fortunately twenty | one | pilots have announced they will release “Blurryface,” the follow-up album to 2013’s “Vessel.” I remember seeing them perform “Guns for Hands” and all the energy they put into their act so I’m incredibly stoked to see what will come next.

  1. Kendrick Lamar dropped “To Pimp a Butterfly” a week earlier than originally planned and I am so onboard with that. He caught the world by surprise with an instant-classic album and, thanks to him; I’ll probably be locked up in my room for the next four weeks. I wasn’t even done obsessing over Drake’s new album and now Lamar’s? These guys need to slow down.

  1. Kanye West, along with Foo Fighters, will headline Glastonbury Festival. So far only West, Foo Fighters and Lionel Richie are confirmed acts for the festival, which will take place June 24-28 in Pilton, England. If I decide to give up on the whole college life and attend concerts instead, this is definitely going to be one of my first stops considering I’d get to see Kanye West, Foo Fighters and Lionel Richie within days of each other.

  1. One of my deepest, darkest secrets is that I have a huge celebrity crush on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Andy Samberg. Imagine my joy when I saw that he will be hosting 2015 Emmy’s on Sept. 20. So basically the cutest man alive will be hosting one of the biggest events of the year. I’m pretty sure I just died and went to Heaven; I can’t believe this is actually happening.

  1. Okay I actually have to see Nicki Minaj live. On March 16 the Heavenly Priestess Nicki Minaj released dates for The Pinkprint Tour and other acts include Meek Mill, Rae Sremmurd, Tinashe and Dej Loaf. Minaj will grace us at the Gexa Energy Pavilion on July 17. On my possible plans for that day are cancelled because I actually have to go to this concert or I might die.
