Reducing ecological footprints

Breathe. Sleep. Sweat ecosystem conservatism. These are the beliefs of the environmentally aware as they continue to reduce their carbon footprint.

Environmental safety and preservation has become an increasingly important with the issues of deforestation epidemic due to the intensive paper use, the depletion of fossil fuels as well as the ever-increasing, man-made pollution that orbits the earth’s atmosphere further damaging the planet.

Allen High School’s Environmental Awareness Team organization goes above and beyond raising awareness of the damaging effects of human’s on the ecosystem in addition to teaching ways to reduce the size of their ecological footprint.

“Environmental club means I get to help my community in many ways,” said senior Fay Wassihun.

Currently the program is planting a vegetable garden starting with broccoli and will continue to move onto more extensive growing plants as the seasons change.

“This garden is important because it shows high school students the skills to grow their own gardens at home,” said Senior Sydney Calton, “it also gives us a project that we can continually work on and see progress.”

Because of the vegetable garden, students are able to learn about the advantages of home grown fruits and vegetables.

Calton’s idea of the many benefits of cheaper environmentally –friendly produce include the harvesting of organic, genetically-modified-organism-free produce (GMO) at a reasonably lower price.

Signifying the importance in preserving nature, many students gain insight on methods of saving the earth and creating a greener environment for everyone to enjoy.

“I learn that it’s important to help our earth for later generations,” said Wassihun.
