My Everything by Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande is a singer and an actress who went on Broadway and performed in the musical ‘13’ to get a head start on her musical career. Her first hit, “The Way,” featuring Mac Miller, popped on the radio and the Internet, becoming number one seven hours after its first release in 2013.

Since then Grande has released various albums, including her latest album, “My Everything”, where Grande confesses her struggles of fighting with loved ones. In her song, “One Last Time”, she expresses regrets of dishonesty and failure, and she longs to take it all back to try again ‘one last time.’ In her song “Best Mistake”, Grande and her partner, Big Sean, sing from the perspective of a couple who loves each other, however, both have to make up their mind on whether or not loving each other is worth it. The track has beautiful lyrics and is very hopeful, but is blunt in different aspects such as why they love each other in the first place.

I admire how catchy her music is, and the simplicity of its word and tune. Grande does well in sliding bursts of drama in between her more serious notes, and this continually draws the listener into her heart as they listen to her open struggles and discover her values. Grande’s music contains contrast and metaphorical imagery that continues to tie her songs together.

One thing that stuck out at me as pesky, was her song “Problem,” of which the radio overplayed. Her view on boyfriend/girlfriend relationships, and her idea of romance did not appeal so much to me. I am open to her perspective, but I found it was Grande, not her lyrics, that made the music work.

“My Everything” proved appealing and catchy in its very heartfelt, and often optimistic outlook, especially after I got to know this talented musician better.
